My Own 1-hour Phone-down Challenge Outcome

Can I be honest with you?

I’ve let my own boundaries slip with my phone usage lately. I’ve noticed myself picking up my phone even when I’m not really needing it and having anxiety about people trying to contact me and me missing their communication.

So I decided to do my own 1-Hour Phone-Down Challenge, and here’s what I did:

  • I set an intention to be fully present with my family, especially my daughter who had been showing clear signs that she had missed me the past few days and needed some face-to-face quality time.

  • I left my phone and my iPad in my office and didn’t go back to get them until over an hour had passed.

Here’s what I noticed:

  • The quality of my interaction with my daughter improved significantly within the first 10 minutes of me giving her my undivided attention.

  • I enjoyed my time with her more than when I’m checking in on texts and emails.

  • I enjoyed being free of the nagging thoughts of missing something.

  • I wanted more of this kind of time.

Attending to our relationship with tech, especially our phones, is like attending to a real relationship with someone who is needy. It feels like they want to suck up all the energy they can from you. Sometimes, you have the resources to deal with it and maintain your boundaries. Other times, you just don’t.

Changing our dynamics with personal tech is something that doesn’t just happen overnight. It’s an ongoing learning process in which you use and implement tools over and over to achieve the relationship that works best for you.

You can do it too. You are that powerful. It’s time to take back your power.

Lots of love,

Meah
